I don’t know about you, but I have been a fan of colors for years. I am not sure if this is a thing, but I will make it one. I am a coastal grandmother on the bright side. The Coastal Grandmother style is neutral colors, cozy pieces, button-downs, and linen pants. I love this style but with a colorful twist. This is an excellent trend for all the seasons but especially for summer. I can’t believe that yesterday was the first day of summer.

The start of summer is the start of shorts all day, sandals, and short sleeves. Especially colorful and patterned shorts. I want to share how to style your colorful shorts for the summer months. How to pair them with neutrals, so they are the standout piece you are wearing. All summer, I wear easy breezy pieces that can be thrown on, look put together, and give that happy feeling. Here are some tips on How to style colorful shorts.

You can find colorful shorts at different price points to fit any budget. My favorite place to find bright shorts with fun patterns is Lilly Pulitzer. I have been growing my Lilly shorts collection for years. I will add a piece or two each summer. I will usually wait for their twice-a-year sale and grab a pair there.

If there is a style I am in love with, and I know it will sell out, I will grab them right away. Other great places to find colorful shorts are Belk, Vineyard Vines, Loft, and Jcrew, to name a few. Now onto how to style colorful shorts.
How to style colorful shorts
Picking:
Shirt:
When Picking a shirt to pair with your colorful shorts, you should pick a shirt that is solid. The shirt’s color pairs with the color or colors in the shorts. I am a big fan of having at least one or two white and navy blue t-shirts.
These colors will pair with almost everything in your closet—also, the style of the shirt matters. If you have a detailed pair of shorts, a detailed top (even if it is in a solid color) can fight with the shorts. So be mindful of that. Sometimes it can be fun to do pattern play.
Pattern play is when you pair two patterns that compliment each other. An example is a navy and white striped boat neck top and a pair of floral shorts that are in blue hues. They compliment each other because they are in the same color family.
Accessories:
Accessories should be the next layering piece you should pick out. They help to elevate your look and pull it together. Accessories can make a casual look more dressy. The thing you need to be mindful of is wearing too many accessories.
If you do, you can look overdone, and people will not know where to look when checking out your outfit. A style lesson I learned is that less is more and how to tell if you have too many jewelry pieces. Stand in front of the mirror, turn around, and the first piece that stands out is the piece you should take off. Another tip is to use pieces with complementary colors to what is in your top and shorts.
Shoes
Shoes can be the most effortless pieces to pick out in your outfit. If you are like me, most of your sandals and flats are in neutral colors that will go with any outfit. When they are in neutral colors, the piece you can focus on is the style of your shoes. Different styles can go with different looks.
A sandal can be easy to slip on and go. My favorite sandal is from Jack Rogers. Jacks come in a variety of colors. I like their gold ones since they go with everything in my closet. They will pair nicely with all kinds of looks.
I am excited to see how you style your colorful shorts. I would love it if you shared them below in the comments.
