Surfe, Sun and Fun…….
Happy New Year from Cali,
For the past few years, I have gone to visit my parents for the holidays. New Years is always fun with their friends and we always check some things off my list that I want to do. This year, I got to shop on one of Venice Beaches famed streets, Abbott Kinney. Abbot Kinney is a layed back beachy feeling street, with some one of a kind stores. Most of the store fronts are made out of wood with big windows; some are even old bungalows and of course, the street is lined with palm trees. Also, there is cool metal work doors. When I think about Abbott Kinney, it reminds me of Newbury St. in Boston. Both streets have similarities. They are both old streets with character and class, trees and stores you may not find every where. Each street has indicative charm to their surrounding. Newbury St. is clad with brick like the rest of the city, with big old oak trees and Abbott Kinney is clad with wood and has Palm trees. While on Abbott Kinney, I went into some of the iconic or unique stores to the street. One store that is iconic and started there is the Toms store. Now Toms is not only a store but it is also a cafe, where you will see throngs of people doing work on their laptops or reading. They also have a area for dogs to hang out. Another store that was interesting to go into was Junkfood (some of you might know this brand from their cool iconic childhood characters and funny saying t-shirts that have been in other stores). Now upon walking in the store I noticed the interesting ceiling lamps and 60’s style furniture. When I was spotted snapping pictures for this post, I explained to the sales person what I was doing and then I actually got a history lesson. All the furniture came from the Hollywood Bowl flee market. The couch had still been draped in plastic and the ceiling lamp I was admiring had been from the 1960’s worlds fair. Abbott Kinney had a few more stores I enjoyed. There was a store called Antique Bountiful, which was filled (and I mean filled) with many treasures. Anything from knick-knacks, funny glasses and millions of cake stands. There was a Roots store from Canada, and Marinelayer, which is a great T-shirt shop. Here are some pictures from my day on Abbott Kinney.
