What Advice I would Give my College Self….
When I was in college I was fresh faced and naive. I had only lived away from home for one month out of every summer at camp. I had only done my own laundry a handful of times. I had really never had to police myself to get my own homework done, what time to go to bed or what I was eating for dinner. When I went off to college I had to do all this. There is so much I learned in college and so much I wish I had known going into college or during college. Now I don’t regret the things I did not know, I am glad I can pass on what I learned. Recently I have seen others writing letters to themselves when they were younger. It also happened to be that time of year colleges are starting up again. So this got me thinking about writing a letter to my college self with life tips and things I should have done that would help me succeed when I got out.
Dear College self,
You are new to the world of taking care of yourself. You are young and still learning (I guess we are always learning). There is so much to do and see. Not only do you need to learn how to do your own laundry but you also, need to learn how to do time management. You need to figure out how to eat healthily (no one is there putting dinner in front of you and saying this is what there is to eat. You have choices). No one is there looking over your shoulder. Now you may try out a few majors until you settle on one you like (that is OK). Once you figure out what makes you happy and is a major you know you can do well at and you must remember to learn it all. Ask lots of questions and get help when ever you can. It is also important to make sure you have positioned yourself so when you get out you can be ready to find a job that makes you happy. It is so important to do an internship or two (they get you those extra skills that you may not have learned in college, that will help you grow expand on the skills you did learn and will help you learn the real life skills you will need out of college). When you leave college no one will be holding your hand anymore. You might flounder a bit and that is OK (just don’t do it for too long). One thing I never did and wished had done was to be pushed more to do an internship. Other things I wished I had done in college were to go on a semester abroad. I hear all my friends talking about their cool adventures overseas and I wish I had done one too. I also wish I had been more adventurous in college. Branched out and done more things out of my comfort zone. The advice I would give you my college self is live every moment, make lots of memories, make lots of friendships (they are long lasting) and cherish ever day because you will never have experiences like this again.
Sincerely your older self,
Here are some pictures of me in College: some I think I should have burned LoL!
